The Writer’s Chronicle is the bimonthly publication of the Association of Writers & Writing Programs. Since 1967, the magazine has been a valuable resource for writers at all stages of their careers. Each issue features essays, articles, news, and conversations about writing and publishing. The Writer’s Chronicle is for writers, readers, and anyone who loves books. Submission Guidelines

The Writer’s Chronicle welcomes pitches between October 15 and December 15, 2025. The best—and perhaps the only—way to make sure your pitch is right for TWC is to read the magazine from October 2024  to present. Starting with that issue, The Writer’s Chronicle relaunched with a shift in tone and content.

Articles

We are interested in articles about the craft of writing; personal essays related to the writing life; and explorations of contemporary topics in writing, publishing, and the teaching of creative writing. Our preferred length varies, but in general The Writer’s Chronicle prefers work between 1,500 and 4,000 words. We are open to longer pieces when the scope and subject matter warrant. We do not publish book reviews, interviews, or author profiles.

Please do not submit full or partial manuscripts here. Instead, briefly describe the piece you would like to write (or have written). In your cover letter, include your bio and any details relevant to the piece you are pitching. Feel free to link to a few of your publications. Please note that an acceptance of a pitch does not guarantee publication, and TWC does not offer kill fees. We make every effort to respond to pitches within three months. If a pitch is accepted, we will collaborate with you on a feasible deadline.

Prompted

TWC also welcomes contributions to our Prompted column. For these, paste your prompt or exercise directly into the appropriate text field. Include a 300–500-word elaboration on why you love this prompt, how it works, what it teaches or unlocks, etc.
